Ariz. lawmakers OK guns in parking lots bill

E-mail Print

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Senate has approved a bill that would allow gun owners to keep firearms in their locked vehicles while they're parked at businesses that ban weapons.

Senators voted 18-9 on Monday to approve the measure, which marks the end of legislative action on the bill. The House approved it last week.

The bill had pitted gun-owners against business groups until they reached a compromise last week.

The compromise allows businesses to ban guns if they provide a fenced or guarded parking lot. They also could ban guns in their main parking lot if they provide a nearby secondary lot that allows them.

Supporters say the compromise balances private property and gun rights, but opponents say it could put people in danger at work.
