August 11, 2005 - Andrew Baker of La Grange may be an “only child,” but he’s been a part of the local Boy Scouts family since he was old enough to join. He, also, plays in the local soccer league like many other local kids. He said he enjoys playing soccer because “when you work out your leg muscles, you get stronger and tougher.” When he first started playing soccer, two different coaches told him two different things about kicking the ball. How confusing! Then, after some of the kids started kidding him, he realized that everyone is different, and there are different ways of doing something “right.” So, Andrew decided to help others who might be having difficulties, too. Today, he is playing a lot of defense and really enjoys playing with his teammates. As a Boy Scout, Andrew serves as a senior patrol leader. That means he’s responsible for making plans for camp outs, helping put up tents, and just “solving problems in general.” Andrew enjoys camping, but admits he was a bit homesick, the first few times he was away from home. During the camps, he’s learned a lot about first-aid, leather work, and is working toward the top honor … Eagle Scout. This year will present new challenges for Andrew, as he will be entering the seventh grade. The challenges can make a person nervous, but Andrew plans to just look forward, in a positive way. He also plans to continue his work in Scouts as well as playing soccer. Like most kids, by this time in the summer, he’s ready for school to start so he can be around more of his friends! |
