Garland student named 'Texas Swiss Miss'

From Staff Reports

Morgan Davenport

September 5, 2002 -- The Texas Brown Swiss Association is well represented by 15-year-old Morgan Davenport, a sophomore at Garland High School, who will wear the banner "Texas Swiss Miss" during association activities, including handling out ribbons at livestock show competitions and helping out with an auction during the State Fair of Texas.

Davenport was selected "Texas Swiss Miss" in June. The association selected her because of her involvement with the Brown Swiss dairy cattle breed, and because of her well-rounded list of activities and involvement.

At Garland High School, she was recently elected FFA vice president, and she plans to seek an office on the district level. "I'm seeking the office of president," she said, "but I will take whatever office I get." The district event is in May 2003.

Davenport is also involved in 4-H, serving this year as reporter for her club.

Although she had shown Simbrah beef cattle for years, Davenport was introduced to Brown Swiss dairy cattle about four years ago while visiting a friend's dairy farm. "I went to the barn with her and helped her do some things there. I found I really like Brown Swiss cattle. Their attitude is so much better."

After checking with her parents, Kenneth and Sandy Davenport, the livestock project was changed. Brown Swiss livestock show competitions have taken Davenport to many county events, as well as the "big shows" at State Fair of Texas (Dallas), San Antonio, and Houston.

"At the big shows I've won showmanship at all of them at least once," she said. "And at Houston last year, I won Reserve Junior Champion" with her Brown Swiss entry.

Davenport credits her parents, and ag teacher Joe Mulkey, for their assistance and encouragement that has eventually landed her the title of Texas Swiss Miss.

Although she is only into her second year of high school, Davenport has plans to graduate college and become an ag teacher.
