Congressional group asks for withdrawal of reservoir plan

By LYNN MONTGOMERY | East Texas Edition

August 8, 2002 -- The proposed Marvin Nichols Reservior got the attention of some government officials when 400,000 acres was mentioned to be removed from agricultural production.

Congressman Max Sandlin, and State Representatives Barry Telford, Bob Glaze, Tom Ramsey, and Mark Homer requested a withdrawal for the proposed reservoir at a press conference at the Bi-State Justice Center in Texarkana on Friday, Aug. 2.

A news release issued by the "Northeast Texas Delegation" stated, "Until concerns regarding the long term impact this lake would have on our economy and our environment are addressed, we believe that the Northeast Texas Regional Water Planning Group would be well served to withdraw its recommendation of Marvin Nichols 1 as a proposed reservoir."

"We applaud the efforts of Congressman Sandlin, Rep. Telford, Rep. Homer, Rep. Glaze, and Rep. Ramsey who stated their concerns regarding the Marvin Nichols project today," said Bill Ward, of Ward Timber Company.

The five lawmakers thanked the planning group for the efforts they are making and "stand firm in the commitment of the State Water Plan and the need to address the future water needs of Texas."

A formal request, by the five lawmakers, will be sent to the Northeast Texas Regional Water Planning Group early this week.

The next meeting for the planning group is Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Upshur County Civic Center in Gilmer.
