Nov. 25, 2004 - The Texas Pecan Board will hold its second annual pecan recipe contest Dec. 3 and 4 in the Central Texas town of Early. "The idea, of course, is to promote the use of Texas grown pecans, especially in new and exciting ways," said Marion Bishop of the Texas Pecan Board (TPB). The contest has three categories: main entree, side-dishes, and desserts. The first place winner will be awarded $500. In addition, a grand prize winner is chosen from the category winners. The grand prize winner will receive an additional $1,000. "Prizes are awarded on a point system, with 15 to 20 judges tasting each dish, looking at the overall presentation, and considering the use of Texas pecans in the recipe," said Bishop. There is not a registration fee and preregistration is not required. Those wishing to enter should show up at the designated time with their dish and a copy of the recipe and preparation instructions on an index card. Those traveling from a distant location can use local preparation facilities for a fee, but need to make plans in advance. "The better use of pecans, the more innovative, the better the flavor - the better the chances of winning," said Bishop. He added that last year's winning recipes can be found on the Texas Pecan Board website, and while new entrants can view the recipes, they should not copy them. "New and innovative ways of using pecans in dishes besides desserts and breads is very much encouraged. One of the things the TPB wants to do is promote 'thinking outside the box' in terms of using this beautiful nut," said Bishop. The recipe contest will be part of the Pecan Festival located in Early.
