EL PASO, Texas (AP) — An FBI agent is charged with illegally selling guns and lying to federal authorities.

John Thomas Shipley was indicted in El Paso on federal charges that he sold guns without a dealer's license. The indictment also says Shipley lied to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives about who the real buyers were.

Investigators say Shipley also acted as a gun dealer while trying to sell guns via an Internet site. He's accused of buying 54 guns from 2005 to 2008, and illegally selling all but three of the weapons.

It's unclear if Shipley is in custody or if he has an attorney. His job status status with the FBI also is unclear. He doesn't have a telephone listing in El Paso.
