Goat Roast started as a 'getaway from the kids'

By LYNN MONTGOMERY | East Texas Edition

September 19, 2002 -- What began as a weekend away from the kids has evolved into the 24th Annual Goat Roast in Ivanhoe.

The event is Oct. 5 in Ivanhoe, a small town north of Bonham.

"It all began when a group of us all had babies around the same time. After a year of babies, we decided to take one weekend for adult entertainment," said Gabe Parker, event coordinator.

With the name "goat roast," you would think that the main staple would be goat. Not true said Parker. "The primary meat is brisket. We do roast goat, but there is also sausage and chili, plus all the 'fixins.'"

Goat meat, already processed, is bought in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex for the event.

Several years ago, the Goat Roast merged with the Fannin County bike rally which, according to Parker, brings more visitors to the area. The bike rally begins at 9 a.m. at the I.W. Evans School Center on 13th Street, Bonham.

The bike rally participants can ride up to 68 miles (the longest route). Registration is $25. For more details, contact the Chamber office at 903-583-4811.

Each year the Roast is held at the Homestead Winery, which is owned by Parker and his family, in Ivanhoe. Goat roast events get under way at 6 p.m.

"We have a lot of people come and camp out. There will be a band on stage," Parker said. "If it is not too dry, a bonfire will be built."

Parker also suggested to "dress for the season."

Other events scheduled are hayrides, winery tours and tasting, and a "patented" balloon toss, in addition to the dance.

The Roasting is open to the public and cost is $15 per person. Tickets can be purchased from the Bonham Chamber of Commerce.

People can bring their own alcoholic beverages or wine can be purchased at the winery. The winery will be open from noon on.

Directions to the winery: Highway 78 north out of Bonham; turn right on FM 898 to Ivanhoe; then follow the signs.
