February 28, 2002 -- Several fertilizer companies contacted in East Texas report they do not carry anhydrous ammonia because 1) huge liability and insurance cost and 2) anhydrous ammonia is used on row crops, such as corn, which are mainly grown along the Red River. One fertilizer company in a town near the Red River, which asked to remain anonymous, does carry anhydrous ammonia. They report they do have a problem with theft but the tanks are closely watched by the employees and the police. Not a month goes by that someone is caught trying to steal from the tanks, they said. "Also, a good clue to someone wanting anhydrous (for illegal purposes) is when they ask for five pounds or a few gallons for their garden," a company spokeperson said. |
