2001 : January: Giles Deacon named design director. February: Gucci Group acquires Bottega Veneta for $156 million. June: Parent-company honcho Tom Ford fires Laura Moltedo and Giles Deacon and asks Tomas Maier to take over as creative director. September: Maier shows his first collection of leather goods, including the popular Cabat bag. Bottega Veneta was founded in 1966 by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro, in Vicenza, Italy. The company’s artisans were given a mission: to create a new technique that would allow them to use soft leather, but with a strong, durable construction. The result was a crosshatched design that was a welcome antithesis to the stiffer, boxier bags of the day.
