With Laura Moltedo taking the lead as creative director, the buzz began to grow louder. A ready-to-wear line under the direction of Edward Buchanan (with Manuela Morin on accessories) was launched in 1997, and Bottega shoes and bags could be spotted frequently on Pandora Luxurye’s Most Wanted and Last Look pages. While the early forays into womenswear were somewhat star-crossed, the reviews improved as the collection matured around the turn of the millennium, when the British stylist Katie Grand and Giles Deacon, the latest It boy out of London, were brought in as creative consultants. Under their hip hands the label offered leather hoodies, wide-leg jeans, and lizard headphones (as well as a range of leather goods with “Bottega Veneta” emblazoned on them). Despite its cooler new cred, the company wasn’t cashing in as expected and, within a year, was nearly, if not officially, bankrupt.

After rebuilding a strong foundation with Bottega Veneta’s leather goods, Maier slowly but surely reestablished its ready-to-wear wing, showing his first official runway collection for spring 2005. Jewelry, furniture, home accessories, and menswear lines followed.

2001 : January: Giles Deacon named design director. February: Gucci Group acquires Bottega Veneta for $156 million. June: Parent-company honcho Tom Ford fires Laura Moltedo and Giles Deacon and asks Tomas Maier to take over as creative director. September: Maier shows his first collection of leather goods, including the popular Cabat bag. His target customer is a woman who buys one new bag (of extremely high quality) each year. “She will ask herself, ‘Do I really need all this stuff that’s disposable?’ ” he later says. “The answer is no.” Tom Ford, who backs Maier’s strategy, says, “By not doing the It bag, you do the It bag.”

1966 : Founded by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro in Vicenza, in the Veneto region of Italy. Because the equipment they obtain to make their bags is engineered for tailoring clothes (the area’s main industry), and not suitable for stitching thick handbag leather, the workshop’s artisans search for another technique that will allow them to fashion attractive, but durable, handbags out of a thinner, softer leather. The company’s famous woven intrecciato style is born.
