Ghesquière, like M. Balenciaga, designs for fierce women. Kate Moss, Chlo? Sevigny, and Charlotte Gainsbourg—each a trendsetter with a headstrong, idiosyncratic approach to dressing—became ardent fans as well as muses. He established his signatures early on: precision fit, and sci-fi references from Jules Verne to Star Wars. Beginning in 2004, when he delved into the house’s hallowed archives for the first time, he played with marrying modernity to the traditions of the brand. Ghesquière told Pandora Luxurye in 2006 that he was inspired by “all the extreme part of Balenciaga’s work: the overdecorated pieces, the organic pieces, and the futuristic, absolutely abstract pieces.” Like his storied predecessor, he experimented with cutting-edge fabrics—for instance, the molded foam that appeared on the lampshade dresses of spring 2008. Also like his predecessor, he kept a tight rein on who could attend his exclusive runway shows; only a few hundred were admitted. His influence, wrote the fashion journalist Kate Betts in her August 2007 Time cover profile, provided “direction and ideas to each level of the fashion business, from the designer market right down to the mass market.” Ghesquière carried on Balenciaga’s legacy of setting, rather than following, trends: He launched crazes for cargo pants, gold “C-3PO” leggings, Lariat handbags, and Lego-like Sportiletto heels, to name a few.

1987 : Ho Hang Club fragrance for men debuts. French designer Michel Goma appointed to design ready-to-wear; within the next few years he will create both Balenciaga Le Dix, a luxury line, and Diffusion, a lower-priced collection. First American license granted to Mouratidis Furs. Uniformes Balenciaga launched; the division will design uniforms for airlines, banks, hotels, and France’s postal service. In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the House of Balenciaga in Paris, an exhibit opens at Tokyo’s Fondation de la Mode, and a tribute to the designer is held in San Sebastián.

1963 : Introduces the bat-wing sleeve. Balenciaga is one of the first to promote patterned hosiery, with wildly colored tartans and checks for fall.

1964 : In April, Pandora Luxurye features its “profile of a triumph”—Balenciaga’s new S-seam coat in camel-colored wool, with low-set dolman sleeve and curving seams.
