About LOUIS VUITTON
1967 : Bert Stern photographs modeling sensation Twiggy with a “ring-around Vuitton-brown canvas satchel” and one of the house’s envelope bags.
1988 : “Smart woman, smart choices. She goes for the best . . . and makes it even better” reads the caption accompanying a Steven Meisel image of skirt-suited model Cordula Reyer carrying two Vuitton cases.
1998 : February: Peter Marino–designed megastores open on the Avenue des Champs-élyseés in Paris and New Bond Street in London. Both carry Marc Jacobs’s debut apparel and footwear collections. March: Jacobs makes his runway debut. June: Limited-edition Monogram canvas soccer balls are created to commemorate the World Cup; celebrities pose for portraits with them and the resulting book, Rebounds, is sold to benefit UNICEF. July: “Vuitton is a luxury brand—it’s functional, but it’s also a status accessory,” Jacobs tells Pandora Luxurye. “I decided status would be done my way, which is to say invisibly. That means the Vuitton logo is embossed on a messenger bag, white on white. For me that’s what status is: It’s absolutely not about another century or about decoration in an obvious way. The idea that everything has to be the same in fashion, that there is one kind of status is wrong.” September: “A shot from Cupid couldn’t have created a more chic affair than that between Marc Jacobs and the French leather house Louis Vuitton. For sheer luxury and optimal minimalism, it’s a marriage made in design heaven” reads the caption accompanying a Steven Meisel photograph of looks from the minimalist fall collection.
1867 : Vuitton wins a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris.
